3 Stars Not very practical
I got this when I wasn’t happy with a Gerber Diesel. The SOG suffered from the same flex all over, which doesn’t inspire confidence. Also, the small tools are very inconvenient to open, and some are impossible to open by themselves but always pull a second tool with them.

I ended up paying an extra $35 and got a Leatherman Charge ALX and am supremely satisfied in it.

I returned the Diesel and SOG to Amazon, without any problems. Only lost $6 in shipping, but at least I finally ended up with a tool I like.

5 Stars Can’t be beat
SOG is a company that, for the most part, lives up to its name (SOG was a top-secret team in the Vietnam war that performed sabatoge, psyops, and special operations for the CIA). The company consistently produces innovative, effective products (although they don’t come cheap). The B61 is definitely my personal favorite of their line of multitools, the reason being that it is very simple, and very effective. Most multitools like Leatherman and Gerber are like most pliers… essentially two pieces of metal fixed together at a single pivot point (yeah, Gerbers have a pretty cool way of opening up, but they still have the same basic overall design). Now, the average multitool has a leverage ratio of 1:8, meaning that you get 8 pounds of force on whatever is in the plier head’s grip for every 1 pound of force you apply to the handles. With the B61s, the leverage ratio is 1:14. That’s enough to cut through a quarter like it were butter (trust me, I’ve tried… this morning, actually. Don’t ask). The reason for this is that the handles pivot with each other on gears, and the plier head is connected to the handles just below the gears. Now that may not make sense (I’m horrible at explaining things), but you’ll get it if you look at the picture.

The tools within the handles are made of high-quality steal, and after almost a year I’ve never had one break on me, like I did with my previous multitool (a Gerber). The flip-up covers over the tool-side of the handles can occasionally fall off as they are not permanently fixed to the handles to allow the user to remove them, but are easily snapped back on and really do preserve your hands if and when you need to apply some real force.

I only have two complaints with this product… the socket drive and the knife blade. The spring used to keep the socket one the driver fell off within a month. Then again, I’ve never had to use it, and SOG sells individual components if you want to customize/replace your multitool, so it hasn’t been an huge issue. The knife blade, while easily sharpened, isn’t the highest quality. By that I mean it isn’t the main part of multitool and SOG knows this, and gave the blade a simple grind on one side and left the other side flat. I have no issue with this either because I also carry a pocket knife. If you want a multitool with a good blade on it, go for the SOG PowerAssist.

Overall, its a great deal for a tool of this quality, and it hasn’t left my side since I bought it (which is saying a lot).

After shopping around for a good multi tool and reading reviews,I decided on the SOG B61-N EOD.I couldn’t be more pleased.I was looking for a heavy duty tool and I found a HEAVY DUTY tool.This multi tool will stand up to anything you need it for.Although I don’t own a Leatherman or gerber(but I know people who own both),the only tool that could compare to the SOG is the Victorinox Swisstool RS,which I might get just to have one,but my main multi tool would be the SOG B61-N EOD.If you are looking for a well made heavy duty multi tool,get this one or the Swisstool RS ONLY.

5 Stars Unchanged after a decade, still my favorite.
I’ve been through a few multitools over the years – Leathermans, Gerbers some even made by the same company, SOG. But none have ever held up as well as this mid sized tool. It’s tough, really tough. The pliers are made of durable tool steel that has never chipped, the handle peices are made of a softer alloy that grants it some “give” so you aren’t snapping those little bolts on really tough jobs. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the way each handle tip wraps around the bottom ends of the plier head when fully open really seems to spread the pressure out.

I’ve literally “crused” a couple of multitool handles inward with the traditional folding design. I admit, I abuse any knife or tool I own. I take CARE of them, but I expect them to be able to stand up to anything I put them through within reason.

The Paratool can take it. Cutting wire, fencing, nails or breaking open rusted down bolts is no problem. The blades are good quality and keep a nice edge. The file on this tool is the best you can get, it has a nice, deep bite that never loses its grit, and can put a sharp edge on a splitting axe in 2 minutes. I find it impossible to strip out the phillips head driver too, it seems to be made of the same high carbon steel that the file is made of. The rest of the tools are cold stamped stainless steel, ground down to profile.

Final note. Since this tool can be opened with one hand, I cannot over exaggerate how much more useful this tool instantly become than any other multitool I own, for every possible task. I have hunted down a bull tyrannasaurus rex with only the Paratool simply because of this one little feature. Seriously. Over and out.

We gave one of these to a teenage sailing student, and it was a hit both with her and her parents, one of whom (who is quite a handyman) commented on the quality of the piece and the excellent hand feel. I might have to get one for myself now!

i ordered it december 16, 2005 and today is february 21, 2006 and amazon has still not shipped it. my first order was canceled without notice to me, the second order was placed on january 17, 2006 and the estimated shipping date keeps getting pushed back, the latest estimated shipping date is march 1, 2006. i hear this is a good multipurpose knife, but i suppose it will be hard for me to know, because amazon sells it, but will not ship one to me.

I am incredibly disappointed in this. IMHO, it is a complete waste of money. It is very difficult to use. The pliers are always in the way and have to be manipulated before you can use ANYTHING. The “ruler” is useless. There are no scissors. I own a Gerber Suspension which is light years ahead of this piece of junk.

4 Stars Very rugged tool!
I bought this tool after being caught in an emergency situation where it would have really come in handy. After carrying it for the first week or 2, I couldn’t imagine having ever gotten along without it. 3 years of daily use now, and I finally broke the blade, and will need a replacement. Very useful and rugged tool (much better than the Leatherman in my drawer) – only complaint is no lock on the main blade or phillips screwdriver, where I sometimes need to apply pressure. BTW – “small blade” mentioned in above review is an awl/reamer – not intended as a blade.

I used to carry a well known name brand multi-tool myself until I found a couple superior options ( based on 30+ years as a fire fighter, police officer and bomb disposal technician ( EOD ). I have owned a number of multi tools over the years and abused them all ( that’s why the good ones have a lifetime warranty ). The three best for the money are the 1. SOG Powerlock , 2. Victorinox Swiss Army Knife SwissTool RS and 3. SOG Pocket PowerPlier (PPP)- don’t waste your money on anything else – ” Leather Guy ” can’t come close to a SOG or Victorinox in performance, functionality and warranty – in my opinion!!! I do own other brand multitools and have a desk drawer full of them and they are used solely for opening envelopes and packages.
