5 Stars Not bad.. but be aware it’s big and heavy
It came sharp, the sheath is quite good. Very stiff, as expected. Big / heavy too, but has stood for about a year and it’s still going strong.

For $30, I think I got quite a decent deal. For $45? I’d probably spend a few extra bucks and get the USMC Kabar for something a wee bit smaller, but no complaints.

I love this knife. It’s fairly big for a short knife, slightly heavier than most AND it looks menacing! If you’re going out in the woods or any type of desolate terrain, you won’t feel alone if you’re carrying this with you. It’s a Ka-Bar so you can’t go wrong with one of these!

5 Stars a minimal single-solution backwoods knife
I wouldn’t feel too put out if this is all I had for shelter building, even preparing small gauge firewood. It’s single bevel profile and 1/4″ thickness make for an excellent tool for batoning and splitting. I know it sounds heavy, but that single taper makes it lighter than I would have expected. It’s got a handy, well balanced, quick-witted feel to it. I’ve cut trees down with mine, just swinging it. It’s really too substantial for kitchen craft- not that it won’t cut what needs cutting (it comes sharp)- and as a hunting/dressing knife it’s overkill. Think of this as a single-stop survival knife compromise that leans on the side of hatchet/prybar. The sheath is plenty secure. It uses a pair of snaps to hold the handle in place that can be rotated in either direction so you can release the knife however you prefer. This is a good knife for someone with big hands.

4 Stars This is a knife for left-handed people.
I ordered this knife from Amazon; and I received it promptly. The only problem is that this knife is designed for a left-handed person. The serrated edge only shows on one side of the knife. Nowhere in any of the reviews or the knife description does it say that this knife is for left-handed people. I am right-handed. Although the knife looks great with the sheath, I am unable to use it. It is disappointing given that I spent a great deal of time researching and selecting this knife. I plan to return this knife to Amazon due to the fact that it is designed for a left-handed person. I did not give the knife a 5-star rating due to the fact that I am returning it.

As Lt. Dunbar found out, every guy should have a knife. Not a little pocket knife but a KNIFE (who needs a hat anyway). Any KA-BAR will do the trick but I love the feel of the hanlde on this model. Not that I plan on skinning some Buffalo anytime soon but I could if I wanted to.

4 Stars Extremely sharp!
Looks to be a great knife. I have yet to put it through it’s paces, but I’m impressed so far. Out of the box the blade is razor(seriously) sharp. The handle is very comfortable and it has a good balance. My only reservation is with the sheath, seems a little flimsy. I would prefer a kydex sheath, but don’t think a factory one is available yet. This one won’t fit the other model sheaths as the blade is wider. overall, I’m very happy with it.

5 Stars best knife i’ve owned
having spent 13 years in the military and spent so much time in the wilderness, i’ve found this to be the best knife. the little extra length of the blade offers a little extra chopping power. the full tang of the knife will toss away any worries you might have of the blade breaking from the handle. i would recommend not using the knife to pry too much though since it is a bit longer than a standard blade. the spine is geometrically reinforced to make it pry if needed however. the long cutting edge gives the user a serious advantage to skinning an animal, sheering a plant, or giving you that little extra range you need. the handle has a rubberized grip to make it really stick to the hand making it more easy to handle. the butt cap seems to be pretty solid and reliable to do some hammering if need be. having a wider spine than the cutting edge, the knife makes a good wedge if you hammer a heavy stick on the back side of the blade to chop through wood or other materials.

in a fighting situation, the knife has the added notch to aid in a lock during close quarters locking moves. the curve of the knife tip makes for a good bowie slasher but has a nice angle similar to a spear point, making a stabbing strike much more effective ensuring deeper penetration.

the design of this knife is nothing short of amazing. good job Ka-Bar!

5 Stars Ka Bar=AMAZING!
WOW! is all I can really say about this exceptional piece of art! From the instant I opened the box, I knew I had something special here! First off, This knife is made just heavy enough to feel absolutely rock hard, yet light enough that it doesn’t pull your pants off when attached to your belt.

The smell alone is an almost-sensuous experience. It smells vaguely of polished gun, or gun oil; also of pure testosterone incarnate!

The sheath included with it was more than I expected and was more than adequate for the knife.

Also, having only viewed this knife on [...], I had not realized just how big this knife is! IT’S HUGE!!

4 Stars Sharp, but inconsistent sharp spots
I have heard a lot how people say how this knife is really sharp. Well, my knife has some problems with the straight part after the curve and before the serrations. It is dull. Not even sharp enough to break the skin under moderate pressure while rubbing (yes, I tried this to test the sharpness).

The tip is like a pin though. It is sharp. The curve is also really sharp, like a razor. The serrations are also decent, but some parts are sharper than others. I don’t know if my knife just has a defect, but it does not hold up to the hype. But then again, I have high standards for sharp.

It is however VERY well built, fits comfortably in the hand, well balanced, and can definitely do some damage to anything that comes in its way.

5 Stars Ka-Bar 1271 – Awesome Knife
This is an impressive knife. The blade is a good length for a hand to hand combat knife. Too long for practical tool use and too small for taking down trees. Just like advertised, this knife is what I would grab when I hear something go bump in the night. Perfect size to compliment your sidearm.

I do wish both sides of the blade arrived sharpened. The black finish on my blade scratched very easily, but the blade does stay reasonably sharp with use.

Oh yeah, this is most likely illegal to carry in your state, so don’t leave it laying around in your car or EDC on your person.

This KA-Bar feels right. Its super hard material should withstand severe use in survival ops. The blade is thick and sturdy and the weight makes it strong. The seven inch length is excellent for most activities.

Like the LT, I suggest sharpening before serious use. This is a weapon for use, not display.

Thankfully, this Ka-Bar is U.S. made. You have to be careful with this manufacturer as well as a few others who now use Taiwan and China for their “international” lines. Buy U.S. Ka-Bar, Japanese Kirshaw, Japanese Spyderco, U.S. Gerber, and maybe some German Hen and Rooster.

5 Stars …for the money…
This is a great deal for a Ka-Bar knife especially a black tanto knife. It is built rock solid, the grip is tight. The kydex sheath looks unbreakable. It is sharp out of the box but you’ll probably want to put a “razors” edge on it. One of my buddies ordered one as soon as he saw mine. If you like knives, you won’t be disappointed for the money.

4 Stars Not what I expected, but a good knife
I see they changed the picture to the correct one, as it showed another (Tanto style)when I ordered it. Oh well, it’s still a good knife, although much smaller than I imagined. Great for mounting on a tactical vest, but the small handle is uncomfortable with larger or even medium sized hands. Good feel, excellent quality. This is my first KA-BAR and won’t be my last.

5 Stars First knife, great knife.
As I sit here and type this, I hold the knife itself in my lap, I occasionally pick it up and look over it’s black matte finish and silver edge. I shake it a little in my hand, reaffirming it’s weight, and I place it back in the sheath and down on the bed next to me. Not even a minute passes before I pick it up and examine it again.

I simply love this knife, and cannot put it down.

Now I’m not an expert, by any stretch of the imagination; this is in fact my first knife, but maybe my opinion can help someone out anyway. So if any of this is wrong, or just plain ignorant, I apologize, these are just my unedited thoughts as I look at it.

The knife’s handle is very nice, the grip on it is a sort of rubber finish with ridges as shown in the picture, it’s large enough to fit my hand rather comfortably, and the base of the grip, which some uses have speculated could be used for hammering, seems to perform that task fairly well. The blade is large, around 8 inches as stated, and the finish is very nice, though my knife did not come razor sharp, it came sharp enough to cut through paper pretty well, which is all I could ask for right now. The tanto point is, of course, very sharp, and I have nicked myself a couple of times with it already, but that’s my own fault for being careless, so I can’t blame the knife for that. The balance seems to be exactly where I rest my index finger while holding, between the first ridge of the grip and the blade, which is very nice. I don’t know if this is a standard thing, but it’s still nice either way. If you hold the knife around the handle at this point with just your thumb and forefinger you can feel the weight there, and this is pretty cool, or I find it cool at least.

The sheath, is simply awesome, though the locking mechanism is a little tricky at first if you’ve never used it before, I was afraid I was going to snap the thing into pieces, it works well. Though the buttons on mine that secure the knife weren’t fitting at first, a little stretching put them in place nicely. Besides looking cool, it looks like it can handle some pretty intense punishment, I plan on testing that out before making any guarantees however.

I really don’t know what else to say about it, though my blade had a nick in it, and a streak from what appears to be a chemical or liquid of some sort, it’s otherwise very beautiful, the sheath as well. It’s fun to hold, look at, and I’m sure if I need to use it for any sort of purpose, camping or general cutting, that it will perform quite well, it just feels like it should, though time will tell.

I agree with everything Y. Tsuchida said in his comprehensive review. The only minor — and I mean minor — change I would want is to the sheath. It has two very tight nylon snap-on straps and a physical block that requires you to bend the sheath back when removing the knife. I find this to be overkill since it requires three operation to remove the knife. Well, at least you won’t be complaining about losing the knife because it fell out of the sheath.

The balance really is just about perfect. A+ knife with no frills — just pure function.

I own an old Ka-Bar Knife nice piece of steel fits well in the hand this one has a much smaller handle and blade. I’ll pass it on to my son(12), I think he’ll enjoy it but it’s to small for my hand.

5 Stars damn good knife
i found my skinner in a hollow part of tree when i was 11-12 yrs old. i brought it home and showed my dad who noticed that it was a little weathered and a tad beat up. he guessed that it had been in those woods for a while, sheath and all. after cleaning it up and checking to make sure it was sound, my dad gave the knife to me. i’ve had it ever since (i’m 34 now)and that knife is among the best that i own, and i own quite a few. it keeps its edge and i have put it through hell on some of my camping trips. i’m an eagle scout and former marine recon with a lot of survival training. hell, i staid for KATRINA and never evacuated. mainly because i coudlnt move my snake, pregnant and all. between my ka-bar, my henry survival and my training, my snake, charlotte, and i did just fine.

4 Stars Large enough for survival and small enough for skinning
Can be used as a skinner and a survival knife.

Perfect in between size. I have the Gerber LMF II for a true survival knife, but if I don’t want to carry that heavy sucker I carry this. It’s also small enough to skin a squirrel successfully without destroy the meat.

Beautiful handle that feels very nice in your hand… I don’t have another knife that feels better than this on in your hand. Stacked Leather is my favorite.

Sheath is alright, nothing fancy. It’s a little tough to place back in the sheath while on your hip without cutting yourself or the sheath itself… Just be careful.

I would recommend this as a relatively inexpensive hunting knife.

4 Stars Rock solid knife, lives up to the Ka-Bar name
This knife has performed well. I haven’t heavily abused it, but it’s given me no sign that it wouldn’t hold up to anything I could throw at it.

I ordered it with the kydex sheath, and was very impressed with that combination. It locked securely into the sheath even without affixing the nylong restraint, which was nice. I don’t like knives that are complicated to get out of the sheath, or require two hands to put back into the sheath. With this, you can pop it out or back in easily, and still have no fear of it shaking loose, even in an upside down carry position.

It needed some sharpening out of the box, so be prepared for that. But that’s not why I gave it four stars. I would have given it four and a half stars if I could have, because my only gripe is that the texturing on the handle could be a little bit rougher. I have noticed that when it’s raining, or if I’m very sweaty that my hand does tend to slip a litle unless I have a very firm grip. This hasn’t been a big problem in use, just a minor annoyance. Some grip tape added to it fixed that right away.

That being said, I would happily trust this knife with my life, and I believe that the price is very fair for a knife that you could hand down to the next generation.

1 Star Not what I expected at ALL……
I was about to go on a major camping trip and wanted to buy a “good” knife. I didn’t have much time to shop, so I bought the Ka-bar due to the historic name. That was a huge mistake as the knife is made from a very soft 1095 carbon steel. The problem is that the long blade is too thin for soft steel and can actually be bent sideways with little effort. I found this out the hard way during my trip only about a week after I bought it. After several uses simply shaving wood, I looked at it and noticed it looked slightly bent. By placing my thumbs on the side of the blade where it connects to the handle (in technical terms, on the blade’s heel, just above the bolster), one set of fingers near the tip and the other set on the bottom of the handle, I actually straightened it back out with only my hands! The problem plagued me throughout the trip and the knife was never used again. Since it had actually been used in the woods, the store wouldn’t take a return so I lost out completely. There are other knives out there in the same price range with MUCH better quality.

The SOG SEAL Pup is actually $12 LESS, still has a serrated/straight edge combo, and is a higher quality steel blade. Gerber and Cold Steel also have comparable knives for roughly the same price as the Ka-bar.

2 Stars Poor Quality Control
I bought this knife about a week ago…and it arrived very fast(3 day) and i loved that the shipping was to speedy. but the quality control checking was just horrible. the blade wasnt sharp at all. it could hardly cut paper, the serrration was just a little bit sharper. on the tip of the blade one side was sharpened to the top which is way to high for the edge to be. and on the other side the tip wasnt sharpened so it was rounded and there was no point at all. the middle of the blade was scratched. It is a great knife dont get me wrong. but the quality control on the knife i purchased wasnt very good at all. the leather sheath it comes with is very tight and not very well made (comes from mexico and not the USA like the knife itself) so i would suggest the Kydex Sheath(i bought one as well). other than the quality control the knife is a great knife! my best friend has one and it is just amazing! recommened for sure.

5 Stars Great knife
I just received this knife today and it surpassed my expectations. Whenever I order a knife online, I do a “cardboard test”, cutting the packing that the knife came in with it. This knife came very sharp, cutting over an inch into the box’s edge with a very light swing. The only two things that are not great about it have to do with the sheath. For one, the logo and insignia printed on the sheath were not as light as I would have liked, but that doesn’t really matter. Also, the strap that secures the knife into the sheath was extremely tight, and does not button easily. These are just minor details though, if you want a really good sheath, buy a new one, like the Kydex sheath Black Kydex Sheath Fits 1211, 1212, 1217, 1218, 1219, 1220, 4, 1281 (KB1216) Category: Knife Files.

1 Star Won’t Ship to FPO?
First, I should say that I own the knife and the knife itself would get five stars. I gave this a poor rating because this USMC knife won’t ship to military addresses.

Hey, I’ve wanted a Ka-Bar for about 20 years and I’m not sure why it too me so long to get one. It is a very good knife. That said, I just couldn’t give it 5 stars as the knife I got today couldn’t cut butter. Seriously – it was crazy dull. Now, I’m an ex-chef so maybe I’m a bit particular about knifes but I’ve bought $5 pocket knifes with far better edges. Anyway, I gave it a little attention and it is now a REAL knife that can – you know – cut stuff. I expect it to last forever.

5 Stars GO USMC and the K-BAR
This knife is as true today as it was in the 1960’s when my dad was first issued his K-bar in the Marine Corps. He lost it when he was divorced 5 years ago and has been making passive comments about it ever since. I bought this and took it to our trohpy shop and had his years or service engraved into the blood line and his name tooled into the leather sheath and gave it to him for Chrismtas and he was almost in tears. This knife meets all Current and Former USMC standards as the elite fighting and utility knife and is something that they all covet. Very nice production.
