Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife

Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife

31rWF4CUYmL. SL75 Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife

Using sticks and stones is one way to get things done around camp, but the Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife is a lot more efficient. Knife designer Bill Harsey constructed this fixed blade knife with a full tang for strength, and the durable fiberglass-infused handle features a Softgrip overmold for ergonomic grasp. Ol’ Bill coupled the Big Rock’s strong point with plenty of belly (deeply curved slicing surface), so it’s ideal for cutting long hours without fatigue. This large knife has a hand guard and a lanyard hole, and comes with a nylon sheath.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Good knife for the money.
Overall this knife is a pretty good buy for the money. Just gutted a deer with it a couple weeks ago. I would’ve liked a little bit wider handle on it, but if you’re wearing gloves, it feels really good in hand. I did end up breaking the tip on mine, after going way out of this knife’s intended usage range, but I was curious to see how much this knife could take, so I won’t fault the knife. This is overall a really good knife for camp use and general knife tasks. I will probably end up buying another one. For the price, it’s well worth it.

5 Stars Great Knife for it’s price, poor sheath
Outstanding knife design, full tang, razor sharp, lanyard hole, sure grip handle, solid thick spine, and just the right amount of blade length.

It is a very nice Hunting knife, however Gerber Failed on the sheath design and I’ll have to have a good kydex one made for it. I give 5 stars for knife by itself, a 1 star for the sheath design.

Gerber should fire the design team that engineered this sheath. They need to find a new job skill in the industry.

It hinders this fine knife from being a buy and take to the field performer.

5 Stars Loved this knife, ordering another one.
The Big Rock was a great knife. I say “was” because through improper usage (using it as a throwing knife, stabbing treated wood, and so forth), I finally managed to break the tip off after more than a year of ownership (and a year of improper usage). It’s only a few millimeters of the end of the blade, but I’m getting a replacement anyway. Might as well at these low prices! The price is incredible for a knife of this quality. Holds an edge very well (at least with the amount of use I put it to). One time it got a little rusty-looking when it rained on the nylon sheath and I didn’t remove it from the sheath for a day or two. However, a sponge and some water took the rust off almost immediately and there was no corrosive damage. Oiled the blade afterwards and never had another problem until I foolishly managed to break off the tip. Love it, getting another one right now.

4 Stars Great Camp Knife
Other than the package stating that this is the serrated model, its a great buy.

5 Stars Lives up to its name.
Good build quality, comfortable grip, nice sheath. Haven’t used it enough yet to be able to comment on edge-holding or durability, but if it’s anything like my other Gerbers, there’s nothing to worry about there. Only complaint is that it can sit a bit awkwardly when seated whilst wearing the sheath on a belt; not a big problem, though.

Yep, I’ve read all sort o’ reviews (after the fact) after buying this knife, and I see all sorts of posers on other blogs whinging about 440A stainless and how worthless it is…

Unlike the blog first test later crowd I’ve actually been USING this knife for two years, and it is fantastic. I’ll note that this is both proper and improper knife use (lots o’ needlessly bored whittling involved). It still holds it’s edge. This is my second Gerber, and I’ve had and used around 12-13 knives over the last 30 years that I would consider “professional grade” knives.

My carbon steel wanna-be commando knife is pitted all over, but this particular Gerber never has picked up a stain that I couldn’t just wash off. My camp knife Gerber was less than half the price when I bought my first one for $50 bucks, and now they are $20 bucks cheaper! Sure, if you want to blow $700 dollars buy a Bear Grylls knife, but if you are normal person looking for a good hunting, camping, fishing and even survival knife this particular one is great.
